A magazine with a social agenda

I subscribe to a lot of brain rotting, pop-culture junkie magazines that mostly just inform me about the latest Harry Potter movie, or when the next Weezer CD is coming out. That’s what makes it extra nice to get a magazine in the mail that makes me feel like I might be learning something. Good magazine is a group of talented individuals committed to the cause, whatever the cause may be. They’re magazine is a great way to get a Worldview of the current state of things. Recent features they’ve had included the percentage of the World that is connected to the internet and what Countries spend the most on clothing and alcohol (guess which one was the USA). When you subscribe you name your own price and can donate 100% of the subscription price to the social cause of your choice. So go out there and add some good to your mailbox and coffee tables.

Check out their main website here http://www.good.is/ and subscribe by clicking here http://www.good.is/magazine.

Retro Week: Music

Ah, the sounds on the 90's. So many great songs came out then. I'm not talking about the Nirvanas and the Smashing Pumpkins of the 90's I'm talking about the super sugary sound of summer. The songs that only pre-adolescent boys and girls (and those extremely out of touch with the music scene) found endearing and boomtastic. The following are songs that made me who I am, or at least made me a terrible dancer.

"Eiffel 65"Blue: What was this song about? The color, the group, the feeling? I'm still not sure but it's got a cool beat and a catchy repeating chorus so rock on!

Duncan Sheik "Barely Breathing" Still one of my favorite songs. When I hear this I always picture myself walking down the street and singing this to myself with a hoodie on.

Deep Blue Something "Breakfast at Tiffanies"
What's better? The Capote novel or Deep Blue Something's song of the same name.

Smash Mouth "All Star"
Me and my sisters favorite song of the summer. We loved "Mystery Men" and this song was a great way to celebrate summer. We watched this video thousands of times.

Toad the Wet Sprocket "Good Intentions"
Only a band from the 90's could be called this. Great song, cool video.

Seal "Kiss from a Rose"
When batman was only cool to grade schoolers, this song was the shit!

Wallflowers "One Headlight"
If this song doesn't take you back, your either too old or too young. That last part makes me depressed.

Chumbawumba "Tubthumping"
The greatest one hit wonder of all time. What's scary about this song is you can replace every word with Chumbawumba and it still makes sense.

4 Non Blondes "What's Up"
A great chick band that featured only totally hippied out brunettes. Take that Brittany Spears!

Lou Bega "Mambo Number 5"
The official song of the 90's, (besides the Macarena) this song had it all, women, dance moves, and a bit of risque lyrics. Listen to all the women he has. Monica, Erica, Rita, Tina, Sandra, Mary, Jessica, and You makes you my man.

Retro Week: Toys

You weren’t a kid if you didn’t have toys and the 90’s was full of wonderful toys to keep us entertained for hours. At least until video games and cartoons were invented and ruined our attention span.

Pog’s
Everyone I knew had a collection. These got banned from our school for creating gambling addictions on the playground. By the way, does anyone know what the deal was with the “poison” pogs? They weren’t named after an 80’s pop metal act, but they did something if you flipped over it in a game. Remember going up against a kid that had like a two-ton slammer? Such an unfair game.

Slap bracelets
Grade school wasn’t complete without having a kid slap his bracelet every two seconds in class and having the teacher take it and put it in her desk.

Beanie babies
Even I had a massive collection of these. They were like pokemon, but instead of creepy Japanese creatures, these were based on real animals.

Creepy crawlers
You could make your own bugs and scare your sister and her friends. An essential young lads toy.

Tamagatchi
These were like having a baby, but instead of a baby it was really just a pixilated blob. And when it cried it made a horrible beep until you fed it. And you had to clean up its virtual crap.

Silly putty
Put it on comics and see it on a green background. I guess that’s cool. It bounced as well, so double bonus.

Skip it
I think one time I got to nine. I told everyone and ran around the playground until I fell asleep behind the kickball backstop.

Stretch Armstrong
Stretch him and he grows, or break him and have gross ass corn syrup get all over your Ducktales PJ’s.

TMNT Pizza shooter
My personal favorite toy as a kid. I’d line up my Ninja Turtles and G.I. Joes and other figurines down the hallway, and shoot vicious cured meat pizzas at them. I miss being a kid.

Koosh ball
I don’t know who named these, but they sound vaguely sexually.

Magna doodle
Like an etch-a-sketch for those who were retarded.

Slip n’ slide
The best way to get skin burns on your stomach for the summer. I loved the one where you jumped through the mouth of a crocodile.

Spiragraph
Make cool designs that end up all looking exactly the same. Another toy that most of the “designs” were crap, but every once in a while, they looked wicked cool.

View masters
The coolest way to see stills of your favorite cartoons and comics. Probably one of the best inventions, binoculars for cartoons.

Retro Week: Commercials; Fast Food

In part two of the 90’s commercial saga I’ll explore some fantastic fast food commercials. Some of these are strictly aimed at kids and some argue contributed to childhood obesity. Similar to the cereal commercials, I really can’t believe there are not tighter laws against this kind of advertising. I saw it’s still up to the parents to teach their kids to eat in moderation, but I love advertising. Regardless they’re still nostalgically delicious.

Burger King
This kid club commercial is extra special to me because I had a tape from Burger King of TMNT and this commercial played before it. I watched that tape until it wore out.

Wendy’s: We miss you Dave Thomas. Your whore of a daughter is ruining your legacy.

Taco Bell
I believe this one is the first one to feature the dog that would one day be in every blonde girls purse.

And this is just classic.

Pizza Hut: Pizza Head, what a classic, classic original idea. Totally not ripping off any long running popular SNL skit.

Jack in the Box: Without Jack, this is a very sexy fast food joint.

Quiznos: Great advertising at work I suppose. Still gives me the creeps.

McDonalds: The king of them all. There are so many puns in this one it’s amazing.

Retro Week: Commercials; Breakfast Cereals

In a two part series, I’d like to explore some of the brainwashing, wonderfully colorful and often sugary World of children’s advertising. One day, if I play my cards right, maybe, just maybe I can be working on advertising a cartoon tiger or a mischievous leprechaun. Enjoy the following.
Alpha bits

Ghostbusters cereal- What you gonna crunch?

Frosted Flakes- His paw frosts things

Corn Pops- I don’t play football ‘til I get my Pops!

Apple Jack don’t taste like apples

Lucky Charms: ok stars and horseshoes are lucky, but red balloons, pots of gold and a heart?

Cinnamon Toast Crunch: This came out at the magical time when 80’s style was almost dead, and 90’s neon was just about to emerge.

Honey Nut Cheerios: This is becoming addictively awesome.

Honeycomb: I hate when that happens in school.

Cookie Crisp: I love how there’s a sign that says “big hill”

Cocoa Puffs: Last but not least a commercial that suggests kids that eat this will actually go crazy. And it has that kid from “Third Rock from the Sun”

Retro Week: TGIF Sitcoms

One of the highlights of being a kid was Friday nights. Today, Friday night is required go-out night, a night when you’re expected to drink, congregate and be merry. But, back when we were kids Friday night meant one thing, ABC’s TGIF lineup. The coolest kids had sleepovers on those night, got some Godfather’s Pizza and some Grape Soda, brought over their Nintendos and Sega Genesis, and had a party that sometimes lasted to eleven, eleven-thirty.
The following are some of the most classic TV shows frequently on TGIF.
